Long ago, the sun shone all the time and there was neither night nor cold. The land was covered by one enormous forest, and all the birds sang in harmony. There were rainbow parrots, tall moas, fantails so big they could catch dragonflies, ducks that flew with their feet - and Krikta the kea and his friends, who were always playing practical jokes on the other birds.
But one day, some birds become greedy and want the forest for themselves. So begins the terrible Time of Quarrelling that threatens the forest.
A great shadow then falls on the land - the shadow of Ka, the great bird of all birds. and the keeper of the forest. He is angry at what the birds have done and he punishes them, and Krikta, the most mischievous of birds, finds that he has been too cheeky for his own good.
